Tinnitus and pulsatile tinnitus

Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, humming or other sounds in the ear or head without an external sound source. It may occur occasionally or become persistent and can sometimes be associated with hearing loss or other ear conditions. Pulsatile tinnitus is a rhythmic sound that often appears to follow the heartbeat and may require further evaluation to identify its underlying cause.

Common Symptoms

Tinnitus can be experienced differently by each individual. Common symptoms may include:

  • Ringing, buzzing or humming sounds in the ear
  • Persistent or intermittent noises without an external source
  • Difficulty concentrating because of the perceived sound
  • Rhythmic or pulsating sounds that may follow the heartbeat
Evaluation of Tinnitus

A detailed ENT assessment helps determine the possible cause of tinnitus. The evaluation may include examination of the ears, hearing assessment and other investigations when clinically indicated.

  • Detailed medical and hearing history
  • Examination of the ear and surrounding structures
  • Hearing assessment when required
  • Further investigations for persistent or pulsatile tinnitus when indicated
Management

Management depends on the underlying cause and individual symptoms. Treatment may involve addressing an associated ear condition, managing hearing loss, providing appropriate advice and arranging further specialist evaluation when necessary. Pulsatile tinnitus may require additional assessment, particularly when it is persistent or occurs with other concerning symptoms.
