Tonsillitis and Tonsil Stones

Tonsillitis is an inflammation or infection of the tonsils that can cause throat pain, difficulty swallowing and fever. Tonsil stones are small, hardened deposits that form within the natural crevices of the tonsils and may lead to bad breath, throat irritation or a feeling of something being stuck in the throat. Proper ENT evaluation helps identify the underlying cause and guide appropriate management.

Tonsillitis & Tonsil Stones
Common Symptoms

Tonsil-related problems can occur occasionally or become recurrent. Symptoms may vary depending on whether the condition is due to infection, inflammation or tonsil stones.

  • Sore throat and pain while swallowing
  • Swollen, red or inflamed tonsils
  • White spots, patches or visible tonsil stones
  • Bad breath or persistent throat irritation
Causes & Evaluation

Tonsillitis may be caused by viral or bacterial infections, while tonsil stones commonly develop when food particles, mucus and debris collect within the tonsil crypts. An ENT evaluation helps assess the tonsils, throat and surrounding structures to understand the cause of recurrent or persistent symptoms.

  • Assessment of recurrent throat infections
  • Examination of tonsil size, inflammation and crypts
  • Evaluation of recurrent tonsil stones and bad breath
  • Identification of factors contributing to repeated symptoms
Management & Treatment Planning

Treatment depends on the severity, frequency and underlying cause of the problem. Mild or occasional symptoms may be managed with appropriate medicines, hydration and oral hygiene, while recurrent tonsillitis or troublesome tonsil stones may require further ENT management. In selected cases, surgical treatment may also be considered after a detailed evaluation.
