Respiratory Allergy Testing
Respiratory allergy testing helps identify allergens that may contribute to symptoms affecting the nose, throat and breathing. It can be useful for patients experiencing recurrent sneezing, nasal congestion, cough, wheezing or other allergy-related respiratory symptoms. Testing is selected according to the patient's symptoms, medical history and suspected triggers.
When Respiratory Allergy Testing May Be Helpful
Testing may be considered when respiratory or nasal symptoms are recurrent, persistent or appear to worsen after exposure to specific environmental allergens.
- Frequent sneezing, nasal itching or persistent runny nose
- Recurrent nasal congestion and difficulty breathing
- Cough or throat irritation associated with suspected allergies
- Symptoms that worsen around dust, pollen or other allergens
Common Allergens Evaluated
Depending on the patient's history and symptoms, testing may help assess sensitivity to commonly encountered environmental allergens.
- House dust and dust mites
- Pollen and seasonal environmental allergens
- Pet dander and other animal-related allergens
- Other suspected environmental allergens based on clinical history
Testing & Management
The appropriate testing method is selected after a clinical evaluation. Test results are interpreted along with the patient's symptoms and medical history rather than in isolation. Identifying relevant sensitivities can help guide allergen avoidance, symptom management and an individualized treatment plan.
