Allergic Rhinitis
Allergic rhinitis is a common condition in which the nose reacts to allergens such as dust, pollen, pet dander and other environmental triggers. This can cause inflammation inside the nose and lead to repeated sneezing, nasal itching, runny nose and difficulty breathing through the nose.
Common Symptoms
Allergic rhinitis symptoms may occur seasonally or throughout the year, depending on the allergens involved and the individual's sensitivity.
- Frequent sneezing and nasal itching
- Clear, watery or recurrent nasal discharge
- Nasal blockage and difficulty breathing through the nose
- Itchy or watery eyes and throat irritation
Common Triggers
Identifying and reducing exposure to suspected allergens can help control symptoms and reduce recurrent episodes.
- House dust and dust mites
- Grass, tree and other pollen
- Pet dander and animal-related allergens
- Smoke, strong odours and other environmental irritants
Diagnosis & Management
An ENT and allergy evaluation can help identify the likely triggers and assess the severity of symptoms. Management may include allergen avoidance, appropriate medication, nasal care and allergy testing when clinically appropriate. An individualized treatment plan can help reduce recurring symptoms and improve comfortable nasal breathing.
